Food ShopFeeding the People

The Food Shop is the distribution step when your tutorial asks you to feed residents. To unlock the Wild West Pioneers Food Shop, click your avatar in the top left, discover it in the tech tree, then build it from Citizen's needs. Staff it, keep it within warehouse range, and make sure its service area covers your homes; meals are delivered once per day.

Kovil Gaming's beginner tips cover the food shop as the game's first big ask:

Why Can't You Find the Food Shop in the Building Menu?

It is not in the food chain menu. One player could build a Hunter's Cabin and a butcher there but no shop: the Food Shop sits under Citizen's needs, and you have to unlock it first.

Open the tech tree through your avatar

Click the avatar in the top left and discover the Food Shop (some players call it the grocery store) in the Ideas tree.

Switch to Citizen's needs

Select the Food Shop in that tab and place it. If construction is held up, check the material cost in the preview; one playthrough needed 20 logs.

For the French question “Comment construire l'epicerie”, there is a separate naming trap. In September 2026, a developer explained that épicerie is the cantine and called the naming issue a known bug. In French, build the cantine; there is no separate épicerie building.

What Food Supply Should You Check First?

The shop only distributes food; you still have to make it. In one playthrough, the player unlocked the kitchen and grocery store, built a Gatherers' hut for mushrooms, then built and staffed a kitchen to cook soup.

For that route, place the Gatherers' hut where it can reach mushrooms and connect to a warehouse. Then open the warehouse menu and check that the hut is listed as connected, not just sitting nearby.

Build the kitchen near the warehouse and assign workers. The resource display separates ingredients (mushrooms) from food (soup), so check that food is going up, not just ingredients.

If you're following the March 2026 demo's hunting route, its placement rule needs special care. The Hunter's Cabin should sit at the edge of the green wildlife zone, outside it, and within warehouse range. The butcher also needs warehouse range. The developer warned that placing the cabin inside the wildlife area makes the deer disappear without returning. If your mushroom and soup chain already works, you don't need this one.

Where Should You Place the Shop?

You need two kinds of reach: the warehouse must reach the shop, and the shop must reach the tents or houses. A road alone does not guarantee either. If the supply connection is your sticking point, use the warehouse connection guide.

A spot beside the main road near your homes is a good first choice, because the main road extends the building's range. Keep it inside warehouse range and check the service area covers the homes before you confirm.

In the placement preview, blue means clear, yellow means obstacles, and red means you cannot build there. If you've placed the shop but construction stalls, follow the builders guide before troubleshooting meal delivery.

How Many Shop Workers Do You Need?

Assign shop workers, then inspect coverage again. Staffing changes the reach: in the recorded run, the finished grocery store initially had too little range, and adding employees expanded it until everyone had access. The feeding task completed at that point.

Three employees were enough in that layout. Add workers until the homes are covered, and make sure the supplying warehouse has workers too.

For a “Feeding the Town?” hold-up, inspect the shop's coverage. One player checked the kitchen's circle while trying to finish Feeding the People. The successful recorded run expanded the grocery store's coverage instead.

Why Are Residents Still Hungry With Food in Storage?

One player reported more than 150 food while residents were starving. The advice was to check the staffed distribution shop, the supplying warehouse, and the shop's reach to the tents.

Once those checks pass, allow the daily delivery to happen. The developer explained that the shop delivers meals once per day, so normal speed can make the wait feel long. Check the homes after the next delivery before tearing anything down.

Another player reported that every house showed it was fed while the objective stayed unfinished. Expanding shop coverage finished the task in the recorded layout, but it may not fix every stuck objective.

Once Feeding the People completes, use the settler happiness guide to work on their needs, or head to the Wooden Hut upgrade guide when you're ready to improve their housing.
